The Absolute Basics: What is a Butterfly Valve?
Think of a butterfly valve as a quarter-turn valve that controls fluid movement using a circular disc. This disc sits right in the middle of the pipe, mounted on a central rotating shaft.

To open it: You turn the actuator or handle 90 degrees. The disc rotates parallel to the flow, letting the fluid pass right by.

To close it: You turn it back, the disc blocks the pipe entirely, and the flow stops.
Because their face-to-face dimensions are so thin compared to a bulky gate valve or ball valve, they don't weigh down your pipeline. That makes installation and maintenance way easier on your crew.
Diving Into the Main Types

Body Styles: Wafer vs. Lug

Wafer Butterfly Valve: This one is basically a minimalist design. It gets sandwiched directly between two pipe flanges. The bolts run all the way through from one flange to the other. It’s highly cost-effective, but there is a catch—you can't isolate one side of the piping system for repairs without depressurizing the whole line.

Lug Butterfly Valve: This style has protruding metal "lugs" with threaded holes on the outside of the valve body. You bolt the pipe flanges directly into these lugs. This means you can disconnect downstream piping while keeping the upstream side completely under pressure.
Internal Design: Concentric vs. Triple Offset

Concentric Butterfly Valve: This is your standard, everyday valve. The stem goes straight through the dead center of the disc, and it uses a rubber (resilient) seat. It’s perfect for low-pressure utilities but shouldn't be used for extreme heat.

Triple Offset Butterfly Valve: When the environment gets brutal, standard rubber seats fail instantly. That’s where the triple offset design comes in. By geometry shifting the stem and disc centerlines across three separate offsets, the disc only makes contact with the metal seat at the final fraction of a second before total closure. The result? Zero friction during travel, a true bubble-tight seal, and a massive lifespan even under severe pressures.
