Understanding Valve Pressure: What Do PN10, PN16, and Class 150 Actually Mean?

If you’ve ever looked at a valve body and felt like you were staring at an alphabet soup of ratings, you aren’t alone. Between PN10, PN16, and Class 150, the "standardization" of the industry can feel anything but standard. At Tianjin Guoji Valve Co., Ltd. Breaking Down the "PN" (Nominal Pressure) System
Primarily used in Europe (DIN/EN standards), "PN" stands for Pression Nominale. The number following it tells you the maximum bar of pressure the valve can handle at 20°C.

PN10: Designed for 10 bars (roughly 145 psi). You’ll usually see a wafer butterfly valve in PN10 for low-pressure water distribution or irrigation.

PN16: The industrial workhorse. Rated for 16 bars (approx. 232 psi). As a veteran industrial valve manufacturer, we find PN16 to be the "sweet spot" for municipal water and HVAC systems where surges are common.
The American Rival: Class 150
While Europe talks in bars, North America speaks in Class (ASME/ANSI). A Class 150 rating is often compared to PN20, but don't let the numbers fool you. It’s a temperature-dependent rating. At ambient temperatures, a Class 150 valve can handle about 285 psi, which is significantly higher than a PN16.
Can You Mix Them?
The short answer? No. Even if the pressure capability overlaps, the bolt patterns and flange faces rarely match. Trying to force a PN16 flange onto a Class 150 cast steel gate valve is a recipe for a leak. As a certified valve supplier, we always urge clients to check their flange dimensions before hitting the "order" button.

Temperature is the Silent Killer: Pressure ratings drop as heat rises. A valve rated for PN16 at 20°C won't hold that same pressure at 200°C.

Standardization is King: Whether you need a high-performance butterfly valve or an API 6D Ball Valve, ensure your entire pipeline follows one system—either all PN or all Class.

Safety Margins: Never run a valve at 100% of its rated pressure. We recommend a 20% buffer for sustainable flow control.
