Arch Construction Makes the Difference

A single sphere rubber expansion joint uses one molded rubber bulb reinforced with synthetic fabric or steel wire. Its short face-to-face length makes it an easy, budget-friendly fit for tight spots where installation space is tight.

A double sphere rubber expansion joint (often called a twin sphere rubber joint) links two arches together in series. Adding that second arch doubles the total flexible rubber surface, letting the connector absorb far larger movements without putting extra load on connected pipe flanges.

Handling Pipe Displacement

Movement capacity is where the two designs diverge most:

  • A double sphere rubber expansion joint handles roughly twice the axial compression, elongation, and lateral offset of a single arch unit.

  • For compact runs with slight, predictable thermal expansion, a single sphere rubber expansion joint is usually plenty.

  • For long pump discharge lines or areas subject to ground settling, the double-arch setup gives you the extended movement range needed to prevent joint failure.

Noise Damping and System Pressure

Both styles work as effective vibration isolators, performing much quieter than metal bellows. However, shop tests at TGV show that the dual-arch profile swallows high-frequency pump noise and fluid turbulence more effectively.

There is one practical trade-off with double arches: extra rubber volume means more potential swell under high pressure. That is why TGV engineers usually recommend installing control rods on double sphere units when line pressures run near maximum ratings.
