How to Tell If a Valve Is Open or Closed

1. Quarter-Turn Valves (Ball Valves & Butterfly Valves)

For quarter-turn mechanisms, the position of the handle or lever is your ultimate visual indicator.

• Open Position: When the lever handle is parallel to the pipe or fluid flow, the valve is fully open.

• Closed Position: When the handle stands perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the pipeline, the flow is completely blocked.

If you are using a TGV gear-operated butterfly valve, look at the position indicator dial on top of the gear operator. It will explicitly point to "Open" or "Shut."

2. Multi-Turn Valves (Gate Valves & Globe Valves)

Gate and globe valves require multiple turns of a handwheel to operate, making status identification slightly different.

Rising Stem vs. Non-Rising Stem

• Rising Stem Valves: These are the easiest to diagnose visually. As you turn the handwheel counterclockwise to open the valve, the stem physically moves upward and protrudes out of the wheel. If the stem is exposed, it’s open. If the stem is flush with the handwheel, it’s closed.

• Non-Rising Stem Valves: The stem stays in place while the internal gate moves. For these models, you must rely on mechanical position indicators or the standard "Clockwise to Close, Counterclockwise to Open" (often stamped as open-close direction arrows on the handwheel).

3. Automated and Actuated Valves

In modern smart factories, manual inspection isn't always necessary. Automated systems utilize limit switches and positioners mounted on the actuator. These sensors send real-time digital feedback to your control room, displaying the exact percentage of the valve's opening. Visually, a local mechanical beacon on top of the actuator will show contrasting colors (usually Yellow/Green for open, Red for closed).
