You’ve probably seen some people talk about 304 stainless steel and others talk about CF8. Are they different? Yes and no.

Essentially, 304 and 316 are "wrought" grades—usually used for the valve stem or the nuts and bolts. But because the big, heavy parts of a valve are made by pouring molten metal into a mold, we use casting grades.

CF8 is the cast twin of 304.

CF8M is the cast twin of 316.

If your tech sheet says CF8M, just know you're getting a 316 stainless steel butterfly valve in its cast form.

CF8 (The 304 Grade): Your Reliable Workhorse

If you're moving water, air, or even some food-grade oils, CF8 is usually plenty. It’s got roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which gives it that classic corrosion resistance we all expect from stainless.

Best for: HVAC, municipal water, and light manufacturing.

The reality check: Don’t put this in a salt-water environment. It’ll pit and fail faster than you’d think.

CF8M (The 316 Grade): Built for the Harsh Stuff

Now, if you’re dealing with chlorides, salts, or aggressive acids, you need CF8M. This is the upgraded version. The "M" stands for Molybdenum, and it’s the secret sauce that makes the metal survive where others crumble.
